I'm planning for my Autobiography elective and I thought the first day we'd do some fun personality tests to warm up and get to know each other. I've been trying out different ones all morning, but I've decided with the 6th graders to tweek and use the Golder Retriever/Otter/Beaver/Lion one.  But, if they were a bit older, though, might be temped to try out the Coffee Personality Types (CPT)...

But really, here is how I've recently been wasting spending my time on the world wide web...

Goodreads- Find out what I'm reading and let me know what you're reading!

Modcloth- I had casually browsed this before, but just started RSSing the blog.  Clothes, glorious, clothes!  I'm a littl' bit obsessed...

But really, what is a blog?

I know more people read this now and because of that I've changed the way that I write.  Now I do "updates," with a brief pondering every once in a while.  Some people can so successfully write about other things: books, films, travels, fashion, gardening tools, and bring up the big themes of life without actually saying it.  I hope that in some way this is what I do, but other times I feel I just need to come right out and say what I've been thinking.  If blog entries are any glimpse into a person's life, I used to be much more thoughtful, artistic, poetic, and now I just go places.  I'm also thinking of discontinuing the automatic flow of posts to Facebook. 

I'm on vacation this week and I already tonight I've been writing a lot of thoughts that I really want to share and hear other perspectives on.  I think my current stint as an English teacher and reading teenage poetry is encouraging me to write more.

Is this a forum for discussion, or a stage with a spotlight on me free to say what I want, but blinded to the knowledge of who is listening?

The end? Nah...

As I become repatriated into the expatriate community, I am faced with a serious dilemma. Am I still indiana.amy? I've thought about starting a new blog, but I do have an older blog about adventures in Mother Russia that I could revitalize... I haven't touched it since July 22, 2007.

But I cannot. I could say that my soul has been infused with corn and fields from my time spent in the land of Up and that I could never escape my destiny to be indiana.amy, but really it's just too much of a hassle to change sites.

The irony of my life is that I hate long-distance, internet-only relationships and it now seems the only way I have to keep in contact with my friends is to glue myself to a computer. This is probably why letter writing has become my latest obsession, and I would be truly grateful if I did receive a few back. Still, it is inevitable that in order to preserve friendships (and until I make some real live friends here) time online must be spent. I am thus setting up ground rules for myself, such as:

- Any time I sign into facebook, I must write real messages on at least 2 people's walls. Picture comments do not count.
- Any days where online time exceeds 2 hours, I must blog (if only to prove that my mind has been working)
- No unpremeditated TV (not that I have access to much, being located where I am)
- Avoid wikipedia at all costs

I'm also confessing an increasingly noticeable obsession for reading other people's blogs, particularly those from places I want to go (I'm talking to you, Afghanistan).

And, I'm just saying that several friends have not updated their blogs in a while, not naming names (everyone listed to the right!!!)... ;-)

It's in the past

I've been sifting around my old xanga site for inspiration. The finds are fascinating. Not only was I a more dedicated blogger back then, I was more introspective, believing that one day I could truly find what it means to be "real," and quoted more Breakfast at Tiffany's. I had more online friends, filled out more online surveys, knew more little-known bands (who eventually left me cold, COPELAND!), had more interesting interests, wore a bigger nose ring, wanted to find a Pentecostal-Anabaptist-Orthodox church, wrote more poetry, loved sociology more, prayed everyday for God to take my apathy, and I was way more into the "tea-music-philosophy" crowd. There was more pain and emo suffering, some of which seems a bit silly now, and I was making mistakes right and left and didn't even know it. Oh, it was wonderful :-)
I think I've gotten kind of boring, but seriously when did I have time to be that interesting??? I'm gonna try to get back into some it. The things I wrote back then are absolutely fascinating to me. It's like a museum of... me :-)

Reasons why my dad is pretty much the coolest person ever:
1. He read a book on the history of coffee
2. His music- everything from the who & jim croce to yo yo ma & vanessa mae
3. He learned Chinese (and now Russian) to be better at his job
4. He's got a pretty cool job
5. He grew a beard look more Chinese in a play
6. He's pretty much a genius and knows something about everything
7. Two words... New York
8. He's really good at getting upgrades in hotels, airplanes, and boats... for freeeeee
9. Let's face it, he's a pretty financially secure guy and that's something I can't help admiring in a man
10. The whole dragging me overseas thing... I really liked it.
11. Starbucks is his currency of repentance

And another thing... This would have been interesting to take before taking Historic Christian Belief and the semester in Russia
